“Can you tell me what inspired your latest book?”
“What inspired you to write…”
The question is inevitable, though the wording changes slightly with the interviewer. What inspires you? It’s a damn good question that I find hard to answer, every time.
To truly understand what inspires me, you have to come over to my place, smell the air, feel the breeze and the warmth, touch the water or jump right in, hear the rare birds flying overhead and see the colours that words can barely describe. I do my utmost to transport you to my place, so you can sense all that I do, through my stories.
If you’d like to see what inspires me – what makes me grab a camera to capture the scene, so I can send my characters in later, you’d have to see inside my head, or be there. Welcome to Australia, where most of my readers have never been. Even those who have, haven’t necessarily visited Western Australia. Yet Australia is in the heart and soul of every story I write.
It’s not just the sights, smells and sounds of where I live, either – music plays a part in inspiring my stories, too. From the background music of a scene in a café, pub, nightclub or car, through to music just to set my mood in synch with that of my characters.
So next time someone asks “And what inspired you…?” perhaps I should show them – for this is why I write so much.
Since I’m the only one inside my head (unless you count imaginary characters), I’ve tried to show you a tiny bit of what inspires me in a video – why and how I write like I do. And yes, if you look closely, you’ll see my latest work in progress as I create it – with a chapter I definitely haven’t showed anyone yet, up ’til now.
