Working as a student midwife in an Australian country hospital is never easy, but Belinda finds more trouble than most.
There's the intern doctor who follows her around like an overgrown puppy, the dangerous local wildlife and her own secrets she must keep.
When she finds herself without a place to live, what else can possibly go wrong?
Or is it time for something to go right?

A tiny taste of what's in store:

I touched my fingers to his shoulder to steady myself before reaching for my drink.
His face split in a wide grin beneath his ocean-deep eyes. “I think you've had enough. What'll you give me for it?”
I shrugged. “What do you want?”
His smile shrank, becoming more thoughtful. “You could start with a kiss.”
I looked into those yearning, deep-water eyes of a man who seemed all fire. It's been a long time, but I think I still remember how.
I cautiously placed my hands on the sides of his face and touched my lips to his. His mouth was open, so the draught of his breath cooled my lips for the briefest moment before I pulled away.
“F*** that!” He strode to the coffee table and clunked the glasses down. His hands were empty for barely a moment before they were splayed warmly on my back. “Belinda. That's not a kiss.”
I moved with him as he pulled me closer, one of his hands travelling up to the back of my neck as the other drifted down to the small of my back. I leaned in closer still.
He bowed his head as I tilted mine up. I wet my lips and parted them, feeling fear for the first time. Perhaps I have forgotten how to do this. This is a stupid idea.
He pressed his mouth to mine, layering our lips as we shared a breath. His smiling blue eyes drooped to show blue-veined lids as his tongue stroked mine.
I haven't forgotten. This is new and I'm going to…I'm going to…
His shoulders were smooth beneath my questing fingers, his lips warm and responsive as I deepened my kiss. I felt his chuckle rumble through both of us, though I couldn't see him with my eyes closed. He tasted of whiskey with a hint of chocolate and I wanted more…
“Now that's a kiss.”

To celebrate the release of Water and Fire in paperback, I thought I'd have little party – a sale and a book blitz. Yes, my first ever book blitz, arranged by the wonderful people at Book Enthusiast Promotions.

For the whole weekend, Water and Fire is only 99c at Amazon.

Even better, I have a whole host of wonderful bloggers hosting Belinda and the very sexy Doctor Aidan Lannon on their websites today.

They'll be posting excerpts, pictures, Aidan and Bel…so go check them out and enjoy the party! You might want to bring your own whisky, though – I think Bel and Aidan have claimed my Limeburner's…yes, even the bottle of Tiger Snake.

Water and Fire: A taste of Chapter 26:

I touched my fingers to Aidan's shoulder to steady myself before reaching for my drink.

His face split in a wide grin beneath his ocean-deep eyes. “I think you've had enough. What'll you give me for it?”

The whiskey must have cost him a fair bit of money, so it seemed fitting that I paid for my share of it. I shrugged. “What do you want for it?”

His smile shrank, becoming more thoughtful. “You could start with a kiss.”

I looked into those yearning, deep-water eyes of a man who seemed all fire. It's been a long time, but I think I still remember how.

A steamy contemporary medical romance involving a sexy doctor, a naughty nurse, a midwife on a mission and a mysterious predator in Albany, Western Australia.

The ebook of Water and Fire is available for 99c from Amazon until the end of the weekend, to celebrate the release of the paperback edition.

Water and Fire – Chapter Two:

“I'm sorry,” Miranda sobbed, before another scream sounded her next contraction.

“No need,” I replied cheerfully. I found myself singing under my breath. I lifted my voice a little so she might hear the soothing song, too. After all, it can't hurt. She's in enough pain already.

A wail heralded another contraction, Miranda's panicked panting punctuating the time between. I glanced at my watch. Five minutes. With the contractions so close, the next one should hit just as we get there.

I braked carefully as we reached the ambulance entrance, the sound drowned in Miranda's deep groan. I threw myself out of my door and pelted to hers.

“EMERGENCY. I NEED A WHEELCHAIR!” I bellowed as a stricken-looking ward clerk appeared at the door.

“Yes, Belinda,” Helen replied smartly, vanishing back inside. She returned in a moment with the small hospital's only wheelchair, angling it perfectly to catch Miranda as I levered her out of the car.

Helen pursed her lips at the sight of blood in the back seat of my car, but she said nothing. I passed her my keys as I took hold of the wheelchair. “Can you take care of my car, Helen?” I asked brightly, already rolling Miranda inside.

With the help of a sleepy orderly named Rob, I quickly ensconced Miranda in a birthing suite, her wail rising as another contraction hit her.

“Where's Jill?” I asked Rob, before he left the room.

“In with Mrs Barker. She went into labour and won't let Jill leave. Jill and the anaesthetist are trying to persuade her to have an epidural, but she swears she won't.”

Two difficult births in one night – Mrs Barker and now Miranda. This was going to be harder than I'd thought. I sucked in a breath, wondering who else would be able to help me. “Where's Dr Henderson?”

Rob shrugged. “He's not on duty – he's on the afternoon shift. We got a new intern for the morning shift – he's shaking in his office. I swear he goes whiter every time Mrs Barker bellows. Not like you – everyone knows you're the ice queen. Cool, calm and collected – no matter what.”

The last thing I needed was a terrified intern for this birth. Alone, then. “Can you send the anaesthetist to me, after he's done with Mrs Barker? Miranda Nelson was in a car accident, and it looks like she's gone into premature labour.”

Miranda let out another hoarse scream.

“And get someone to call her husband. He's up in Perth this week, I believe – tell him we'll have her flown up to King Edward Memorial Hospital as soon as we can. Call the Flying Doctors for transport, too.” I looked at Miranda, straining through another contraction.

Rob hurried out, leaving us alone.

“Just you and me, Miranda,” I said softly.

“No,” Miranda gasped out. “She's coming. She's coming…urngh!”

Not wanting to believe her, I examined her as quickly as I could. She was almost fully dilated. There would be two patients for transport, not one.

And it's up to me to make sure they survive.

“So she is,” I replied, keeping my voice calm. “It's time to push, Miranda. I hope you have a name picked out.”

The ebook of Water and Fire is available from Amazon, Apple, Barnes and Noble, Diesel, Kobo and Smashwords.

Water and Fire – Chapter 1:

A screech and a thump were my only whisper of warning.

I sighed. Another suicide.

I rounded the corner. The humped body of the big buck kangaroo sprawled like a sleeping seal by the side of the road. No other animal has a death-wish quite like a kamikaze kangaroo. The bitumen glittered in my headlights, as if frosted over in preparation for the dawn. The crunch beneath my tyres belied the thought of ice. I knew the sound of crushed glass.

The tail-lights of the tiny Toyota bled their glow onto the gravel beneath. The tree toppled between those two red eyes had folded the roof into a pair of ominous knitted eyebrows.

I slowed to a stop in the gravel behind it, hoping my help wouldn't be necessary. I left my headlights on to illuminate the wrecked hatchback. “Hello?” I called.

The answering groan was deep and came from the car. I peered through the back window, but the inflated airbags inside made it hard to see. I approached the driver's door.

“Are you okay?” I asked, knowing the answer already as I surveyed the damage done by both the kangaroo and the tree the driver had blindly swerved into.

“No,” whimpered a female voice. “I…I can't get out.”

Her door had popped partly open, so it wasn't difficult to pull on the handle to widen the gap. The airbag sprouting from her steering wheel pinned her to the seat. Under the weight of the fallen tree, both the roof and the console tightened into a cage around the airbag, making her car a padded cell in which she started to panic. She struggled to twist out of her seat, but she couldn't.

I waited a moment, before asking, “Can you undo your seat belt, or is it stuck?”

She looked at me in wonder and began fumbling for the seat belt buckle. I clearly heard the click that released her, before her scream shattered the air.

When she ran out of breath, she panted for a moment before she spoke. “I'm sorry,” she said hoarsely.

I gritted my teeth into a smile. “Nothing to be sorry about. Let's get you out of there.”

I helped her out of the driver's seat and onto her shaky legs. Only as she straightened beside me did I see the swollen belly that the airbag had hidden. I had barely a second to recognise her pregnancy before another contraction seized her. My arms were strong enough to support her, but her scream was longer this time. I saw the blood and fluid staining the driver's seat and felt a frisson of fear.

No. Can't hesitate. I'll do whatever it takes to save her. I won't lose this patient.

When the sound had died away, I said quickly, “Let's get you to my car, where you can lie down.”

I helped her hobble to my car in time for her to topple into the back seat as her next contraction hit. Her scream rang in my ears, but I pulled out my phone, ready to ring for help as soon as she was silent.

I looked down. No signal. I held her life in my hands and mine alone. No, not just hers. Her unborn child, too.

So be it.

“I'm sorry,” she whimpered, “but I think I'm having my baby, too.”

For the first time, I smiled properly. “Then you're in luck. I'm Belinda, one of Albany Regional Hospital's best midwives and I'm on my way to work. I guess I'm starting early today, with you as my first patient. What's your name?”

“Miranda Nelson,” she groaned over the next contraction. A gout of blood soaked the seat beneath her.

“I'll buckle you up and then we'd best get going,” I said brightly, hoping there were no police up yet to catch me speeding. If I didn't get her to hospital soon, Miranda might bleed to death.

Not on my shift she won't.

A screech and a thump were my only whisper of warning.
I sighed. Another suicide.
I rounded the corner. The humped body of the big buck kangaroo sprawled like a sleeping seal by the side of the road. No other animal has a death-wish quite like a kamikaze kangaroo.
– Belinda in Water and Fire

Kangaroos are just too cute and cuddly to kill people. How could a hopping herbivore harm someone?

Welcome to Western Australia, where 90 kg of buck red kangaroo, bounding along in 8 m long strides up to 1.8 m high at 50 kph, can write off a car and seriously injure the people inside it. They come seemingly out of nowhere and when you swerve to miss them…chances are you'll hit something else or risk losing control of your car.

According to Australian car insurance companies, more than 200,000 car crashes in Australia each year were caused by kangaroos – around 75% of all car accidents. That doesn't include the number of kangaroos that were hit by trucks or cars with bull or roo bars on the front, ensuring the vehicles weren't damaged in the collision. One in six – 17% – of Australian drivers have hit a kangaroo with their car. Others, like me, have been lucky enough to have some very near misses.

Including one on my first trip to Braeside, the house where Dr Aidan Lannon in Water and Fire lives.

A kangaroo came out of nowhere, bursting from the bush on one side of the road. It cleared the bonnet of the car and hightailed off into the bush on the other side.
“There goes Lucky,” Aidan said.
I struggled to understand. “The kangaroo's name is Lucky?”
Aidan laughed. “Any kangaroo I don't hit is called Lucky.” – Belinda in Water and Fire

Unlike Aidan, I didn't name the kangaroo that flew over my car, though she was probably just as lucky. Most kangaroos don't survive collisions with cars. Kamikaze kangaroos, indeed.

Water and Fire will be released in paperback on 16th November – only four days to go.

Now, for a character who is called the Ice Queen by her own colleagues, the blue-eyed Belinda hides many secrets beneath her cool exterior.

For a little more on Belinda – including background on her family and past that isn't included in Water and Fire – I've put together a character profile video, which you can view here:

The ebook of Water and Fire is available from Amazon, Apple, Barnes and Noble, Diesel, Kobo and Smashwords.

Water and Fire will be released in paperback on 16th November. The wait is almost over, with only six days left.

Now, those who have read my work before know I can't write any genre of fiction without a bit of quirky Australian humour. Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer is the closest I've ever written to horror, yet it includes a romantic scene in a toilet. I know, right?

So, it should come as no surprise to some that even the most romantic parts of this book include references to Australian flora and fauna.

Can you name any other romance author who compares the hero to a tree (and the world's sexiest one, at that), when describing how irresistible he is?

There are hundreds of places where you can do these things – you can even pay a media consultant to do it for you, if your budget runs to such things. If it doesn't…that's where I can offer some suggestions. Right, I'll go through the points above and answer each of them for you.

1. You need people to see your book.

I am absolutely in love with blogs for getting the word out about my books. Not mine, but other people's blogs. In my online wanderings, I stumbled across this particular gem:

Bit'n Book Promoters

Bit'n Book Promoters are a team of passionate, friendly and feisty individuals who are here to help you get your books out there. They're all authors and know how hard it is to get books noticed, so they want to give a helping hand to others like themselves.

They provide book promotions, reviews, author interviews and kindle freebies. Their blog mainly focuses on reviews and author interviews and detailed book promotions. Both their Twitter and Facebook pages provide book promos, updates and links to what they're doing on their blog. They also regularly post kindle freebies only available on their Facebook page, along with pretty book & film quote boxes, which they design themselves. Yes, they do all this for free.

If you'd like their help, you can stalk them on Twitter, Facebook, or their website.

2. You need people to review your book.

I was really lucky and stumbled across a group in Goodreads that offered a review exchange – Book Review Depot. Not a case of, “You review my book and I'll review yours,” but a group where there's a list of books to review and your book goes on the list, or the waiting list, as the list is capped, once you've completed five reviews. Books only stay on the review list until they've received ten reviews, when they get bumped off by the next book on the waiting list. I admit I was fairly sceptical as to whether this group would succeed, but the group has generated more than 400 reviews in a few short months and their numbers are growing. One of my books, Water and Fire, hit their review list last week and I've already received three honest reviews for it.

3. You need people to see how amazing your work is.

Now this is a hard one. Amazon tried to overcome it with their KDP Select program, letting authors give free copies of their books out. Smashwords does the same, though they don't require exclusivity for it. Basically, what you need is a web-based platform where your work is freely available – ideally, where people can see it on their smartphones, tablets and computers. I have two suggestions here.

First is Wattpad. I started uploading Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer there when it was a draft and was absolutely thrilled when it hit 1.3 million reads in October. That's the draft, mind you – the published version is naturally far more polished.

Wattpad is wonderful in that it allows you to upload short stories and poetry through to full-length novels, which people can view on their phones through various apps or on their computer. It's so easy to read what's on Wattpad that it's no surprise there are more than 20 million members worldwide – almost the entire population of Australia.

Another site like it is Widbook, which isn't as popular, nor easy to read on your phone. The advantage of Widbook is that it allows you to include pictures and video in your book. I've used this to include background videos for Ocean's Gift, though my most popular book is the short story version of Water and Fire, which has been in their Top 5 books on both their Top and Most Popular lists.

4. Advertise it to the world.

There are a lot of paid advertising services out there – from individual blog ads to mailing lists like those at Bookbub. The prices…well, today I'm just mentioning one free one.

The Fussy Librarian. It's an email ad service, like Bookbub and its less expensive brethren, but for the moment, it's free. Even better, if you help them build their numbers by posting about them on Facebook before your book is featured, they give you a free ad to use in the future, when they start paying for their services. Now, Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer is due to be featured on the 15th November with them, so after that I can tell you how successful it is!

Any other free book marketing tips you'd like to share? Or do you have further information on the free services I've mentioned above? Please let me know in the comments!
