About the Author

Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.

She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.

Sensationalist spin?

She dabbles in photography so she can show some of the things she’s seen.

Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world.

She’s the author of many bestselling books, which you can find out more about here.

About the Blog

Yes, this is where I break out of third person, because I’m most comfortable in first, anyway. Even my characters tell you their stories in their own words and thoughts.

I did my Masters degree on shipwreck research, up and down the West Australian coast. From the 1600s to the present day, the true stories of survival and tragedy fascinated me, so when I submitted my research thesis, I decided to write a book to share some of my findings with the world.

It had mermaids in it and it definitely wasn’t suitable for children. I still can’t explain to my research supervisor why I chose to write fiction – but it sure is fun!

All of my books are based on the same premise – an incredible amount of background research on settings and circumstances, setting the scene in my head for when my characters wander in and upset my realistic world with their fictional story. I spent days traipsing through underground bunkers and tunnels for the setting for Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer – and all she has to say about the place is that it’s dark. Given what she goes through in an underground bunker, she might be excused for not describing it more thoroughly. Torture can affect a girl that way.

My research notes for my books can be as long as the books themselves – even without the countless photos I take to remind me. I share only a small part of my research here on this blog, for those who are more interested in the in-depth information that I don’t include in my books. The settings, the shipwrecks…and, of course, how mermaids have sex.

I draw on a combination of research and experience for my stories and I hope it shows. The descriptions in my books are sparse, to say the least, because I feel the story is more important than the colour of a character’s hair. If details are what you want – you’ll find them here. If there’s any part of my books you want to know about – the circumstances of a shipwreck, the background of a character, what my references are for my medical knowledge, or why mermaids like raspberries so much – you can contact me here.

I create a fair few videos, which I post on YouTube, with background photos and information, too – you can check out my YouTube channel here, if you prefer hearing me talking to you about my research instead. Be warned – I am Australian and I’m told I have sexy voice. I’m still not sure if people are joking about this last bit…I leave it to you to judge.
